Government Model College, Kaziranga which has been initiated by the Government of Assam as a premier institution was established at Kaziranga, the world famous place of UNESCO natural heritage site as well as the World iconic place for promoting higher education across the country in the month of August, 2020. Since then the college is known as Government Model College, Kaziranga and now onwards coined as GMCK with a distinct identity and considered as new Government College. The college is located at 26.603440 latitude and 93.413230 longitudes. The campus of the college is around 300m away from 37 No. National Highway and is located 4 km away from Kohora, the centre place of the Kaziranga National Park. On the other, it is situated approx 226 KM west of Gauhati University, > 221 KM east of Dibrugarh University, 226 KM South of Assam University Silchar while 222 KM to Madhabdev University and close to Tezpur Central Uiversity ~100 K.M. Well connected to the rest of the country by roadways, railways, and airways it serves as a gateway to eastern Assam. The college is well-connected from different directions of the state via roadways, railways as well as airways. Buses, cars and other vehicles are available connecting the road to college in all weather. The nearest railway stations of the college are Furkating junction, Golaghat and Jakhalabandha under Noagaon district. The neighboring air connectivity to the college lies at Jorhat, Dimapur, Tezpur and Guwahati.
The college is enriched with its vast resources, flora and fauna, and especially for its surrounding tea plantations. Presently the college has 7 departments with 17 faculties and one librarian. Currently, the college has one RCC building with the ground floor and two temporary buildings to run the classes. The college, being a new one is confronted with many hurdles regarding building etc, however we are managing in temporary arrangement. Though at present, the college possesses only ~1.5 ha of land and a library of 2700 Sqft, the college owes continuous support from the Government of Assam. We hope the college, which is our second home will very soon be able to avail the facilities with the approval of the Government. With the basic aim of promoting higher education in the state of Assam specifically among the surrounding population of Kaziranga, the Government Model College is always striving to fulfill the dreams of every student. In addition, the college is also in the verge of introducing modern innovative techniques for imparting quality education.
With renewed attention towards both infrastructural and academic development, the college has proposed the introduction of Science and Commerce streams very soon in aligning with NEP2020. Being a model college, the institution has planned to introduce innovative and vocational courses too. By imparting vocational skill, the college tends to produce a pool of skilled youth having greater chances of self employability. The college has a Career Counseling Cell in order to support students to venture career options as well as to help them develop communication ability and soft skills, through timely seminars and counseling. Along with this the college also provides Women cell, Anti-ragging cell as well as a Health and Hygiene Unit. Till date, the dedication of the faculties proves teaching to be a lifetime commitment.
The concern of the faculties for the progress of the students as well as equipping themselves to utilise their expert by the student fraternity will definitely establish a unique identity of the college. Apart from academics, the college lays special emphasis on co-curricular activities for the all-round development of the students. The college is located in a space enriched with multicultural groups and diverse tribes with their different languages, traditions and culture that attracts everyone, especially the foreign visitors.
The vision of Government Model College, Kaziranga is to create a full-fledged Higher Educational Institute of excellence with classical infrastructure facility having futuristic approach to impart Holistic Education in Humanitarian science with futuristic provisions of Science, Commerce, Technical Education, and Health including skill courses.
